Cunene River Mouth

The Cunene River Mouth forms the southern edge of Iona's world, where permanent water meets the Atlantic and the Angolan-Namibian border landscape. In a park defined by aridity, the wetland and river channel are ecologically precious.

Birdlife is the main draw, along with the sheer contrast between water and desert. Access is remote and should be planned carefully; this is border country, and practical permissions matter as much as scenery.

A story
The Cunene is one of the few perennial rivers to cross this desert edge. After hundreds of kilometres through Angola and along the Namibian border, it reaches the Atlantic in a wetland that feels almost improbable beside the surrounding sand and gravel.
