Ganvié Museum

The small museum in the village documents the history of the Tofinu people and the founding of Ganvié during the period of the Atlantic slave trade. The exhibits include photographs, traditional objects from daily life on the lake, and displays explaining the social organisation of a community that has lived without solid ground for over three centuries.

The museum is modest in scale — it is not a grand institution — but the context it provides makes the visit more meaningful. Understanding why Ganvié exists on the water, and how the community has adapted its entire way of life to the lake environment, transforms what might otherwise be a picturesque boat trip into something more substantial. The admission price is included in most tour pirogue arrangements.
