Things to Do

Ganvié is itself the attraction. The experience is arriving by pirogue across Lake Nokoué and exploring the stilt-house village that has existed on the water for centuries. A Pirogue Tour of Ganvié is the standard way to see it; these depart from the shore at Abomey-Calavi and take one to two hours. The Floating Market is active in the mornings when women in dugout canoes bring fish and vegetables to exchange between the houses.

There is a small Ganvié Museum in the village that explains the history of the Tofinu people and how the lake village came to exist. For those who want to stay longer, there is one guesthouse in the village itself, which allows you to experience the water town after the day-trippers have left and the lake becomes quiet.
