Tanguiéta

Tanguiéta is the practical gateway to Pendjari — a small commercial town of around 75,000 people in the wider commune, sitting where the road from Natitingou meets the route into the park. It is not a destination in itself, but almost every Pendjari visitor stops here first to fix permits, pick up a park guide, fuel up, and grab a meal. The handful of small hotels along the main street provide simple but workable rooms, and a couple of restaurants do passable West African food and cold beer.

The town has a good Sunday market that draws traders from the surrounding Atakora villages, including some Somba people from the hill country to the south. There is a small Catholic hospital here with a regional reputation, founded in the 1970s, which is one of the better medical facilities in northern Benin. Most travellers spend a single night in Tanguiéta either side of their park stay, and that is usually plenty.
