Tanougou Falls

Tanougou Falls drop down a stepped sandstone cliff at the eastern edge of the Atakora range, about 20 km northeast of Tanguiéta and right on the edge of the Pendjari park. The main fall is around 20 metres into a deep, clear pool surrounded by dense gallery forest. It is the standout natural sight in the area outside the park itself and an easy half-day trip from Tanguiéta — a short walk in from the road brings you to the pool.

The water flows year-round but the falls are at their best in the wet season (June to October), when they are full and the surrounding bush is green. In the dry season the flow drops to a thin curtain but the pool stays cool and inviting, which is more or less the point after a hot game drive. There is a modest entry fee paid at the village of Tanongou, and local guides will walk you the short distance to the falls.

A story
The falls drop out of a notch in the Atakora escarpment and feed a clear plunge pool at their base — one of the few places in this part of Benin where you can safely swim in fresh water. Local custom holds that you should not bathe in the pool on Wednesdays, when the spirits of the falls are said to be at rest.
