Cascades de Karfiguéla

A series of waterfalls on the Komoé River, the most popular natural attraction in Burkina Faso

The Cascades de Karfiguéla — also called the Banfora Falls — are a series of waterfalls along the Komoé River about 12 kilometres north of Banfora. The river drops about 150 metres in stages over a kilometre or so of rapids and falls, with deep pools at the foot of the larger drops where swimming is excellent.

The falls are most spectacular in the rainy season (July to October) when the volume is at its peak, but they are also worth visiting in the dry season — the pools are easier to swim in and you can scramble onto the rocks at the edge of the upper falls. The walk from the road through the cane fields takes about thirty minutes. Local guides hang around at the entrance and can take you up to the lesser-visited upper falls. Bring water and a swimsuit; pack out any litter.

A story
The falls are formed where the Komoé River drops off the sandstone plateau of the Burkina Faso uplands on its way south to the Bandama in Côte d'Ivoire. In the rainy season they are spectacular; in February and March the volume drops so low that visitors can walk across the lip of the upper fall. The Komoé eventually flows into the Gulf of Guinea after 1,160 kilometres.
