The Marché Central is the city's main daily market, set in a substantial two-storey concrete building near the railway line. The ground floor handles fresh produce — mangoes, papaya, peppers, smoked fish, kola nuts — while the upper level is given over to textiles, calabashes, leather sandals, traditional medicine, and rough-hewn wooden masks.
It is less aggressive than markets in Ouagadougou, and the stallholders are usually happy to talk. Mornings are cooler and more interesting. Watch your bag in the crowds, and expect to bargain hard if you want to buy crafts; first prices are aimed at the rare tourist.
