Markoye Rock Engravings

Remote Oudalan rock-art area with Libyco-Berber engravings on volcanic outcrops

The Markoye area, northeast of Gorom-Gorom, is known for rock engravings on dark volcanic outcrops. The figures and signs are part of a wider Saharan and Sahelian rock-art world, and they give the region a deeper history than the market-day surface suggests.

This is not an easy independent visit. Treat it as a serious local excursion, with a guide who knows both the archaeological sites and the current security situation.
