Nossa Senhora do Monte is a small settlement in the interior of Brava, connected to Vila Nova Sintra by old bridle paths that wind through some of the most pleasant walking country on the island. The village takes its name from a pilgrimage church — Nossa Senhora do Monte — which is the focus of the island's main religious festival, held on 15 August each year.
The walk from Vila Nova Sintra takes about an hour through terraced fields and past stone walls thick with flowering vegetation in the wetter months. The church itself is simple, but the setting above the valley is attractive and the route back can be varied to pass through several small hamlets. If you time your visit for the August festival, you will find the entire island population in attendance.
