The Igreja Nossa Senhora da Conceição stands at the top of the main square, a solid, whitewashed building with a twin-towered facade that has been photographed from every angle by every visitor who ever came to Sao Filipe. It's not a grand church by any measure, but it has the presence of a building that has anchored a community for three centuries, and the interior has a plain dignity appropriate to an island where things are built to last rather than to impress.
Come in the early evening, when the praça in front fills up. Older men occupy the benches; children run circuits around the square; vendors sell water and snacks from small carts. The church doors may or may not be open — if they are, step in for the coolness and the quiet. If they're not, the square itself is the attraction.
