Zinga

Oubangui River settlement south of Bangui, where wooden houses and fishing pirogues line the border waterway.

Zinga is a small riverside settlement south of Bangui on the Oubangui River, which forms the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Wooden houses line the bank, fishing pirogues cross to the Congolese side, and daily life revolves entirely around the water. It makes a natural stop on a river journey — the Lobaye River confluence is a few kilometres downstream.

Few travellers pass through, but for those making the river trip between Bangui and the south, Zinga offers an authentic glimpse of Central African riverside life. The town is reached most easily by river; overland routes from Bangui are possible in the dry season but the road conditions are variable.

Things to Do

Zinga's attractions are the river and the riverside life itself. This is a place for travellers on a river journey who want to stop and spend time in a small Central African riverine community — not a destination in the conventional sense, but worthwhile for those who find themselves passing through.
