Ubangi River

The Ubangi River is Impfondo's reason for existing: the town grew as a river port and administrative post on the west bank, and the river remains the primary link to the rest of the country. Boat traffic is constant — dugouts, motorised pirogues, and occasional larger vessels. Watching the activity from the bank in the early morning, when fishermen are returning and pirogues are loading passengers and goods, is the most vivid hour in town.

River crossings to the DRC side are possible by hiring a pirogue, but require proper documentation and should be approached with care. The DRC bank is part of Équateur province, equally remote and with its own security considerations. Do not cross without advance preparation and clear local guidance.

A story
The Ubangi forms the entire border between the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo from the point where the Uele and Bomu rivers converge, running nearly 1,000 kilometres to the Congo River. At Impfondo the river is wide and crossed by dugout canoe, the only practical crossing — the nearest bridge is hundreds of kilometres away.
