Not a cafe in any conventional sense, but the afternoon khat market is the social institution that does the work a cafe or bar does elsewhere. From around 1pm, trucks arrive from the highlands loaded with fresh khat bundles; men select their portion and then settle into groups to chew through the afternoon. As a visitor you won't participate, but watching the ritual — the careful selection, the sharing, the conversation that unfolds over several hours — is a genuine window into Djiboutian culture. Tea vendors circulate. The market is in the African Quarter and the atmosphere is open and unhurried. Don't take photographs without permission.
