On the west bank of the Nile, the cliffs are topped by the domed tomb of the marabout Qubbet el-Hawwa, a local saint. Below it, carved into the hillside, are the tombs of pharaonic nobles and dignitaries — provincial governors who ruled this frontier region. The climb up is steep but the views over the Nile and Elephantine Island from the top are some of the best in Aswan.
