Dokki is a dense Giza district immediately south of Mohandiseen, separated from central Cairo by the Nile but only 20–30 minutes by car. The neighbourhood is home to several significant institutions: the Egyptian Antiquities Museum warehouses, the Cairo Zoo (one of Africa's oldest, opened 1891), and the Agriculture Museum. The surrounding streets are solidly middle-class without the international veneer of Mohandiseen or Zamalek.
The Cairo Dokki area is less frequented by tourists than the east bank neighbourhoods, but provides a view of Cairo that's genuinely different from the Islamic or downtown circuits. The Zoo — though in a state of variable maintenance — is massive and historic. Dokki Metro station (Line 2) connects to downtown and Zamalek.
