Agricultural Museum

Palatial museum complex covering the history and practice of Egyptian agriculture

The Agricultural Museum in Dokki occupies a handsome 1930s neo-Pharaonic complex of multiple pavilions, originally built by the Egyptian royal family as a private residence and converted to a public museum in 1938. The collection covers the full history of Egyptian agriculture from ancient times to the present: tools, farming implements, natural history specimens, displays on irrigation (the Nile's role in Egyptian agriculture is thoroughly documented), and livestock breeds.

The building is more interesting than the collection for most visitors — the scale and neo-Pharaonic ornament are impressive, and the grounds are large and green. It's a thoroughly Egyptian institution, rarely visited by tourists, with an atmosphere quite different from the better-funded downtown museums. The entry fee is minimal.
