Local Restaurants

The main streets of Heliopolis support a broad range of Egyptian restaurants and cafeterias. At the cheap end: the staples of Cairo street eating — ful medames and falafel for breakfast, koshary (lentils, rice, pasta, tomato sauce, crispy onions) at any hour, grilled meats in the evening. At the other end, the suburb has several sit-down restaurants serving Egyptian home cooking at a level above the city-centre tourist options — the clientele is local and the quality tends to be honest. Worth exploring the side streets off the main boulevards, where small family-run places often turn out to be better than anything on the main drag.
