Mansoura University

One of Egypt's largest universities, with a liver transplant centre that leads the continent.

Mansoura University was founded in 1972 and now enrolls over 100,000 students, making it one of the largest universities in Egypt and the Arab world. The campus spreads across a substantial slice of the city centre and gives Mansoura much of its character — the streets around it are full of bookshops, cheap cafés, and the particular energy of a university city that takes itself seriously.

The Faculty of Medicine is the institution's most celebrated department. Its urology and transplantation programme, founded by Professor Mohamed Ghoneim, became one of the most active kidney and liver transplant centres in Africa and the Middle East, attracting patients and medical teams from across the region. The campus is open to visitors and the central grounds make for a pleasant walk. The university bookshop stocks Arabic-language titles on Egyptian history and Delta culture that you will not find easily elsewhere. If you have a connection to anyone studying or teaching here, even a slight one, expect to be shown around with considerable hospitality.
