Getting There

Minya sits on the main Cairo-Aswan railway and the parallel Nile-valley highway. Trains from Cairo's Ramses station run regularly and take around four hours; the line continues south to Asyut, Sohag, Luxor, and Aswan. There is also a domestic airport at New Minya, though scheduled services have come and gone.

Foreigners visiting the surrounding archaeological sites are usually required to travel with a police escort. Arrangements are made through the tourist office or your hotel. The security situation in Middle Egypt fluctuates, so check current advice before planning a trip. Within the city, taxis and microbuses cover short distances cheaply.
