Bilad er-Rum

Quiet archaeological area west of Siwa with rock-cut tombs and a ruined classical temple.

Bilad er-Rum is one of the quieter archaeological sites west of Siwa, with rock-cut tombs and the remains of a small classical temple set in a harsh desert landscape. It has attracted its share of romantic claims, including old speculation about Alexander the Great, but the real interest is more modest and more satisfying: a lonely trace of Siwa's Graeco-Roman period.

There is little on-site interpretation, so it is best visited with a local guide who can explain what you are looking at. For most travellers it is a secondary stop after Shali, the Oracle Temple, and the Mountain of the Dead.
