Qohaito

Qohaito was a major ancient city on the high plateau south of Senafe, linked to the Red Sea trade and the wider world of pre-Aksumite and Aksumite culture. The site is broad rather than monumental in the postcard sense: stone walls, cisterns, terraces, rock art, and scattered ruins spread across a landscape that drops dramatically toward the Rift Valley.

What makes Qohaito special is the sense of incompleteness. Much of it remains unexcavated, and there are few interpretive signs, so a local guide makes a real difference. Go early for clear light and cooler temperatures, and give the site time. It rewards slow looking.

A story
Qohaito is often described as only partly excavated, and that understatement is part of its force. You walk through a landscape where walls, terraces, and ruins keep surfacing from the grass, suggesting a city far larger than the visible remains.
