Matara

Matara, often called Metera, is an archaeological site south of Senafe and one of the most important ancient settlements in Eritrea. The visible remains include obelisks, stone structures, and fragments of a city that flourished through the pre-Aksumite and Aksumite periods.

It is not a tidy museum site. Expect scattered remains, modest facilities, and a strong need for a guide who can explain what you are seeing. That roughness is part of the experience: Matara feels like a place still waiting for the attention it deserves.

A story
Matara is also known locally as Metera or Balaw Kalaw. Excavations have found evidence of long occupation, including inscriptions and objects that connect the Eritrean highlands with the ancient Red Sea world.
