Lake Tana

Lake Tana is the reason Bahir Dar exists as a travel base. Ethiopia's largest lake spreads north from the city in a wide, brown-blue sheet of water dotted with islands, papyrus boats, fishing craft, and monasteries hidden in forest.

Boat trips are the classic Bahir Dar outing. Some travellers visit only the nearby Zege Peninsula; others make longer circuits to island monasteries farther out. Go early, take sun protection, and remember that monastery access can depend on gender, local rules, and the mood of the day.

A story
Lake Tana feeds the Blue Nile, but it feels more like an inland sea than a river source. Its islands and peninsulas protected monasteries for centuries, which is why so much religious art survived here.
