The northernmost of the five lakes and the most photogenic — a near-perfect circle of water set in a deep wooded caldera, with Yerer volcano rising behind. The water is clear and the shores quiet; swimming is excellent.
Around fifty bird species have been recorded around the lake, including African fish eagle, malachite kingfisher, and several heron species. Several small lodges sit on the rim. Emperor Haile Selassie kept a retreat here in the 1960s, and his lakeside house — now derelict — can still be made out on the eastern shore. Easily the most rewarding lake to circumnavigate on foot, though the trail is rough in places.
