Lake Hora

A crater lake immediately east of Lake Bishoftu, with a more rounded, gentler profile. The Hora Recreation Centre on the western shore is the long-running lakeside park — pedalos, paddleboards, a small zoo of African game animals, and a cafe sit above the water.

The lake is the cultural heart of the Bishoftu cluster. Beyond the annual Irreecha thanksgiving, the site is a year-round meeting place for Oromo families — most visibly on Sundays when Addis residents drive down to picnic on the lawns above the water.

A story
Lake Hora is the site of the annual Irreecha thanksgiving celebration of the Oromo people, the largest gathering of its kind in Ethiopia. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims dressed in white travel here on the first Sunday of October to give thanks at the lakeshore.
