The Jamia Mosque — also called the Grand Mosque or Friday Mosque — is the largest and oldest mosque in Harar, standing near the centre of the walled city. The current building dates substantially from the 16th century, though the site has been a place of worship for considerably longer. Its tall minaret is a landmark visible from many of the surrounding lanes.
Non-Muslim visitors are not permitted inside, but the exterior and the surrounding square are worth seeing. The neighbourhood immediately around the mosque is the most densely Islamic part of a city that already has more mosques per square kilometre than almost anywhere in Africa. The sound of Friday prayers here carries across the whole of Jugol.
