Shrine of Sheikh Abadir

The shrine of Sheikh Abadir, the 10th-century saint credited with founding Harar as an Islamic city, is one of the most sacred sites in the old city. The compound contains the saint's tomb and is an active centre of religious life — pilgrims come year-round, and the annual mawlid celebration attracts thousands of worshippers from Ethiopia, Somalia, and beyond.

Non-Muslim visitors should be respectful and discreet near the shrine; entering the main tomb chamber is not appropriate. The surrounding lanes, however, are among the most interesting in Jugol — quiet, shaded, and lined with old whitewashed walls.
