Cantonments

Leafy diplomatic and residential quarter between Osu and the airport

The quieter, tree-lined quarter between Osu and Kotoka Airport, home to the bulk of Accra's foreign embassies, high commissions, and diplomatic residences. The streets are wider and better maintained than most of the city, the houses tend toward colonial-era bungalows and newer villa compounds, and the general pace is slower than anywhere closer to the centre.

There's not much in Cantonments to draw a visitor specifically, but a walk on a Sunday morning when traffic is light reveals a side of Accra that the city's main arteries conceal: jacaranda trees over whitewashed walls, guards dozing outside embassy gates, and a few good restaurants that have set up here to serve the diplomatic crowd. A handful of mid-range hotels in the area offer decent value and a quieter night's sleep than Osu.
