Sumbrungu is one of the easiest places near Bolgatanga to see the painted compounds of the Upper East Region. The round mud buildings and granaries are decorated with bold geometric designs, using earth pigments that turn ordinary walls into something ceremonial.
The village lies on the road toward Paga, so it combines naturally with a northern excursion. Go with a local guide, ask before photographing homes, and remember that these are lived-in compounds rather than an open-air museum.
