Bolgatanga's appeal is cultural and market-based rather than monumental. The central market is the most rewarding place to spend time, particularly on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Outside town, the Tengzug Shrine in the Tongo Hills is one of northern Ghana's most significant traditional sites, and Paga with its sacred crocodile ponds is an easy day trip to the Burkina Faso border.
