Tengzug Shrine

The Tengzug Shrine sits in the Tongo Hills south of Bolgatanga, among a dramatic scatter of granite boulders that the Talensi people consider sacred. The shrine complex is one of the most important traditional religious sites in Ghana and is still actively used for ceremonies, sacrifices, and consultations. It was included on the UNESCO Tentative List in recognition of its cultural significance.

The boulders themselves are striking — enormous rounded stones balanced and stacked across the hillside — and the sacred landscape includes shrines, libation stones, and spaces associated with particular spirits and ancestors. A local guide is required for the visit; the fee goes directly to the custodians of the shrine. The walk through the site takes around an hour. Come in the morning before the heat.

The Tongo Hills area, about 20 km south of Bolgatanga, is reachable by tro-tro from the market.

A story
The Tengzug Shrine is an open-air sacred site — visitors are required to remove their shoes and, in some areas, their shirts (hence "topless shrine"). The dress code reflects a genuine spiritual practice: the Tindana, or earth priest, who maintains the shrine descends from a lineage that has served these sacred stones for generations. Visitors are shown around by a guide who mediates between the sacred landscape and the outside world.
