The quiet village of Butre lies about three kilometres east of Busua along the coast, accessible by a path through palm groves or by boat. The walk from Busua to Butre is one of the most pleasant stretches of Ghana's coastline — past mangrove-fringed estuaries, fishing settlements, and beaches with barely any visitors. Butre itself is home to a small ruined Dutch fort (Fort Batenstein, built 1656) that overlooks the village from a hilltop; it is now largely overgrown but the views from the hilltop are excellent.
The estuaries and lagoons around Butre are good for birdwatching — herons, kingfishers, and waders are common along the water's edge. Dugout canoe trips through the mangroves can be arranged with local fishermen. The village has a few simple guesthouses and beach bars. Combined with the walk to Dixcove and Fort Metal Cross in the other direction, Butre makes for a good full-day coastal excursion from Busua.
