Busua Beach

Busua Beach is one of the best stretches of sand on Ghana's western coast — a wide arc of golden sand sheltered by a rocky headland to the south, with consistent waves that make it the most reliable surf break in the country. The beach is wide enough that even at its busiest (weekends, when Ghanaians from Takoradi drive down) it never feels crowded, and on weekdays you may have significant stretches to yourself.

Swimming is generally safe in the calmer, eastern end of the beach near the rocks, where the headland provides some protection. The western end, where the waves are stronger, is better for surfing than swimming — there are rip currents and the surf can be powerful. Several local surf instructors operate from the beach and can teach beginners on calmer days; ask at the guesthouses for current recommendations. Early morning is the most atmospheric time — fishing canoes launch at dawn through the surf while mist still hangs over the headland, and the beach is quiet and golden before the sun gets too hot.
