St Joseph's Minor Basilica is a striking Catholic church in Elmina, elevated to the status of a minor basilica by the Vatican. The building stands in contrast to the fort and castle nearby — instead of European military architecture imposed on a colonial trading post, this is a church that reflects the genuine Catholicism that took root in the region following the Portuguese arrival.
The interior is spacious and well-maintained, with carved wood details and colourful stained glass. The basilica is an active parish church serving a large local congregation. Services are held regularly; visitors are welcome outside service times. The building is most interesting in the context of Elmina's longer religious history — the Portuguese brought Christianity in 1482, and five and a half centuries later it remains a living presence in the town.
