The monkey sanctuary is the reason most travellers come to Tafi Atome. Local guides lead visitors into the forest and around the village, where mona monkeys often come close enough to take bananas by hand.
The project grew from local taboos that once protected the monkeys as sacred animals. It now gives the village a direct reason to conserve the grove, and the best visits are less about ticking off wildlife than about understanding how that relationship works.
