Central Wa is small enough to walk, though the sun is fierce from mid-morning onwards and shade is scarce. Shared taxis and tro-tros cover the main routes in town and to surrounding villages. Moto-taxis (motorbike taxis, known locally as "okada") are the quickest way to reach the village mosques and outlying compounds.
To reach the Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary, you need your own transport or a taxi arranged for the day. The road west towards Wechiau is paved for most of its length. Bicycle rental is possible if you ask around at the main market, and the flat terrain makes it a reasonable way to reach the nearer village mosques.
