The Diécké Forest Reserve, about 70 km south of Nzerekore toward the Liberian border, is one of the largest surviving areas of primary forest in Guinea. The reserve protects a significant tract of the Upper Guinea forest ecosystem — one of the world's biodiversity hotspots — and is home to chimpanzees, forest elephants, colobus monkeys, and an array of forest birds rarely seen in other accessible parts of West Africa.
Access is rough and getting there independently requires a good four-wheel-drive vehicle and a local guide. There is no formal tourist infrastructure; you visit on the basis of what can be arranged locally in Nzerekore. The forest is dense and navigation without a guide is inadvisable. For travelers willing to put in the effort, Diécké offers encounters with an essentially untouched African forest ecosystem.
