The old part of Biankouma predates the modern road junction and administrative centre. The buildings here are constructed in the Dan tradition with painted facades using geometric patterns in earth pigments and mineral colours. Many houses have decorated doorways and carved elements; the visual culture of the Dan people is sophisticated and their masks are among the most sought-after in West African art collections worldwide.
The old town includes a house of the initiated women (part of the female initiation tradition) and several fetish houses that serve spiritual and protective functions for the community. These are not tourist sites — they are living religious spaces. Visitors who approach with respect, ask the village chief's permission, and follow whatever guidance is given will generally be welcomed. Do not photograph fetish objects; this is considered disrespectful and potentially harmful to the community's spiritual wellbeing. The combination of architecture, painted decoration, and the opportunity to see a functioning Dan village in its traditional form makes this the most substantive stop in the area.
