The Jardin Botanique de Bingerville is one of the oldest scientific gardens in West Africa, founded in the early colonial period when Bingerville was still the capital of Côte d'Ivoire. Once a serious research station for tropical agriculture, it has slipped into a more romantic, half-wild state, with enormous fig trees, towering palms, and broad alleys shaded by mature mahogany.
It is a pleasant place to walk for an hour, especially in the morning before the heat builds. Maintenance has been patchy in recent decades, but restoration efforts have picked up. Look for the labelled specimen trees and the views across the lagoon from the higher paths.
