Zanzan

Northeastern Ivorian region of savanna towns, old trade routes, mosques, and Comoé wilderness.

Zanzan is the far northeast of Côte d'Ivoire, a region of savanna roads, trading towns, and long distances toward Ghana and Burkina Faso. It is not the country's easy tourist face. You come here for old caravan history, borderland culture, and the feeling of being well beyond the Abidjan-to-Grand-Bassam circuit.

Bondoukou is the best base and the obvious starting point, with old mosques, markets, and masquerade traditions that still give the town real texture. North and west, the landscape opens toward Bouna and Comoé National Park, one of West Africa's great protected areas but a destination that requires planning, patience, and current local advice.

Travel in Zanzan is slow. Roads can be tiring, public transport is irregular, and distances are larger than they first appear. That is also why the region feels rewarding: the highlights are not staged for quick consumption, and the best moments often come from markets, roadside meals, and conversations in towns that see few foreign travelers.

Getting Around

Shared taxis and minibuses connect the main towns, while private vehicles are useful for anything more ambitious. The region is not suited to casual point-to-point sightseeing without local information.

If you plan to visit Comoé National Park, arrange transport and guiding in advance. Distances inside and around the park are too large for improvised travel.

Getting There

Bondoukou is the usual entry point, reached by road from Abidjan via Abengourou or from the Ghana border around Sampa. Buses and shared taxis run, but journeys are long and departure times can be elastic.

For Comoé National Park or smaller towns such as Bouna and Tanda, ask locally before setting out. Road conditions, security advice, and park access arrangements can change.

Things to Do

Zanzan's sights are spread out: Bondoukou's old trading culture, the savanna towns toward the north, and the huge wilderness of Comoé National Park. Do not try to rush the region on a tight schedule.
