Birdwatching

Amboseli has recorded over 600 bird species — remarkable for a park of its size and mainly dry habitat. The swamps are the main draw for birders, holding large numbers of pelicans, storks, herons, ibises, cormorants, and waders. The yellow-barked fever trees around Enkongo Narok are a good spot for African fish eagles and a variety of smaller species. The dry lakebed supports coursers, larks, and the striking kori bustard — the world's heaviest flying bird.

Raptors are well represented: martial eagle, bateleur, African hawk-eagle, and several vulture species patrol above the open ground. In the morning a good guide can identify dozens of species during a two-hour drive without leaving the vehicle. The wet season months bring Eurasian migrants that supplement the resident species. For a serious birder Amboseli is worth a dedicated day or two, with early morning drives giving the best results.
