No park in Africa offers quite the same backdrop as Amboseli. Kilimanjaro rises directly above the southern horizon, its snow-capped summit visible on clear mornings before the clouds and haze build up through the day. The combination — flat dusty savanna, elephants, and Africa's highest mountain — produces photographs that feel almost impossibly good.
The quality of the view varies enormously. On some days Kilimanjaro is entirely hidden by cloud from mid-morning onward; on others the mountain stays clear all day. The dry season months of January to March and June to September tend to give the clearest mornings. The classic shot is dawn: the sky turns pink behind the summit as the first game drives leave camp, and the elephants are usually already on the move. The Observation Hill offers the widest panorama, while the area around Ol Tukai camp puts the elephants and mountain in the same frame.
