Lions, cheetahs, and spotted hyenas are the main predators in Amboseli, and while the park is not primarily known for predator viewing the way Masai Mara is, the flat open terrain makes it very easy to spot and follow animals once they are located. Cheetahs in particular favour the flat lakebed margins for hunting, and the open ground lets you watch a chase from a considerable distance. Leopards are present but rarely seen — like everywhere, they are mostly nocturnal and spend days in trees or dense vegetation.
The lion prides use the swamp margins and tend to be found near concentrations of buffalo and zebra. The best predator sightings come in the early morning and late afternoon when animals are active; the long midday hours tend to be quiet. A knowledgeable guide who knows the park and has radio contact with other vehicles and lodge teams significantly improves your chances. Night drives are not permitted in the national park itself, but some conservancies on the park boundary allow them.
