The countryside around Embu rewards exploration. Some 30 kilometres north of town, near the Mukuuri shopping centre, the Nthenge Njeru and Mvungu waterfalls tumble through forest with a centuries-old cave nearby. The area also holds Kirimiri forest hill, historically significant as a refuge for Mau Mau fighters during the independence struggle — including General Kubu Kubu, one of the most venerated Embu freedom heroes. From Embu, take the road north to Runyenjes (20 km) and hire transport from there to Mukuuri; local people at the centre are willing to show visitors around.
