Kirimiri Forest Hill

Kirimiri is a forested hill north of Embu town that marks the transition between the settled farmland of the lower slopes and the montane forest proper that begins above 2,000 metres. The hill is accessible on foot or by vehicle from the Runyenjes road and offers good views across the Tana River valley and, on clear mornings, toward the distant ridgeline of Mount Kenya itself.

The forest on the upper slopes holds a mix of cedar, podocarpus, and olive trees typical of Kenya's highland forest zone. Black-and-white colobus monkeys are present, and the birdlife includes silvery-cheeked hornbills and a variety of sunbirds. Local guides from nearby villages know the paths well and can explain the area's significance in Embu history; asking at the Mukuuri shopping centre north of Runyenjes is the best way to arrange a walk.

A story
During the Mau Mau independence struggle in the 1950s, Kirimiri served as a hiding place for Embu fighters. General Kubu Kubu, one of the most celebrated Embu freedom fighters, operated from these forests, moving between the mountain's upper zones and the settlements below.
