Elsamere

Elsamere was the lakeside home of Joy Adamson, author of Born Free, the book and film about raising and releasing the lioness Elsa into the wild. The house, set in beautiful gardens on the south shore of Lake Naivasha, is now a conservation centre and museum. You can visit for afternoon tea, which is served on the lawn with black-and-white colobus monkeys dropping from the trees above.

The small museum inside contains Adamson's paintings, personal effects, and exhibits about her work with lions, cheetahs, and leopards. A documentary film about her life is screened during visits. It is about 2 km past Fisherman's Camp on the Lake Road — straightforward to reach by car or bicycle.

A story
Joy Adamson lived at Elsamere after the success of Born Free made her famous, and it was here that she worked on subsequent books about cheetahs and leopards. She was murdered by a former employee in 1980 at her camp in northern Kenya, but the Elsamere property was preserved as a conservation centre by her estate.
