Ferguson's Gulf

A shallow bay on the western shore of Lake Turkana, about 70 km east of Lodwar along a rough track that becomes impassable in heavy rain. This is the most accessible part of the lake from the Lodwar side, and the natural base for camping on the shore.

The gulf is important feeding and nesting ground for birds — pelicans, cormorants, and herons are common, and flamingos appear seasonally. Fishermen from Turkana and El Molo communities work the shallows in small wooden boats. The surrounding shoreline is lava and scrub, reinforcing the sense of being at the edge of the habitable world. Central Island National Park — a volcanic caldera in the lake — can be reached by boat from Ferguson's Gulf.
