Kipchoge Keino Stadium

The city's main sports venue is named after Kipchoge Keino, Kenya's first great Olympic champion and one of the runners who launched Eldoret's global reputation as a training ground. The stadium hosts athletics meetings, football matches, and public events, and is the symbolic heart of the city's sporting identity.

Training sessions are held on the track in the early mornings, and visitors with a genuine interest in athletics may be able to watch — or even join — sessions. The surrounding area has good footpaths for running along the ridges above town, used by athletes of all levels throughout the week.

A story
Kipchoge Keino, born in the hills near Eldoret, famously defeated the American favourite Jim Ryun at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics despite having a gallbladder infection diagnosed just days before the race. He jogged several kilometres to the stadium after his taxi was caught in traffic, then ran a blistering 1500m to win gold — one of the most remarkable performances in Olympic history.
