The covered municipal market just off the main road through town is one of the largest in western Kenya and an excellent place to get a feel for the agricultural wealth of the Gusii Highlands. Stalls heap with bananas of half a dozen varieties, avocados the size of a small melon, tea, pyrethrum, cabbages, sukuma wiki, finger millet and the local sour milk called amabere.
Outside the main hall, a chaos of smaller traders sells second-hand clothes (mitumba), basketwork, and prepared food — chapatis, smoky githeri, fried tilapia from Lake Victoria. Mornings are the busiest and most photogenic time; ask before taking pictures of people.
