Gbarnga Central Prison

The Central Prison in Gbarnga is a working facility, not a visitor attraction, but it is worth mentioning because of its grim role in recent Liberian history. During the first civil war, when Charles Taylor's NPFL faction used Gbarnga as their headquarters between 1990 and 1994, the prison was the site of detentions, executions and abuses that became part of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's later record.

You cannot tour the prison, but the area around it, and the former NPFL administrative buildings in town — some still in use, some derelict — give a sense of how thoroughly Gbarnga was reshaped during those years. For anyone interested in Liberia's recent history, the town's wartime past is a sobering counterpoint to its current calm.
